Manawatu Young Anglers - Kids fish out day
At the Kids Fish Out Day being held this weekend, the last 50 places have just been released for young anglers. The Fish Out Day is held at Centennial (Hokowhitu) Lagoon in Palmerston North on Sunday 17th November is hosted by the Manawatu Fresh Water Anglers Club, in conjunction with Wellington Fish and Game.
This is a great chance for young anglers to get a taste for catching a trout in a controlled environment. Over 1000 rainbow fish are released into a corralled area within a holding net. Experienced and expert help from the Anglers Club ensure the best chance of success.
Bookings essential
Bookings are essential to reduce waiting times - parents/guardians of children are required to register and book a fishing time by visiting Manawatu Hunting and Fishing (200 John F Kennedy Drive, PN). No phone bookings will be taken. Each child will be issued a free licence, given information concerning safety etc, and will be allocated a 10 minute time slot in which to fish.
All fishing gear will be supplied, with top local experts assisting on the day.
What happens on the day?
Fishing will start at 8.30 am and finish at 2.15 pm. After this the net will be lifted and the remaining trout will be released and available to anglers who hold a trout fishing licence.
Free lessons - Teaching them to fish
Once they've had a taste for fishing – where do you go to hone your skills?
In addition to giving kids a taste for fishing, there are exciting new initiatives this year to help teach kids a few more skills that will last a lifetime. The Manawatu Fresh Water Angling Club are generously donating their time to help teach both adults and children. They will be down at the lagoon every night from 4pm till 7pm on week day evenings for the two weeks following the fish out day 18 Nov -22 Nov; 25 -29 Nov.
The event is possible only through the generous sponsorship of those businesses and organisations and the fishing day continues to be a free event for children between the ages of 4 and 12 to 'give trout fishing a go'.
