Dart 18 World Championship at Royal Varuna Yacht Club - Day 2

by Mark Hamill-Stewart 18 Feb 2019 23:46 NZDT 16-22 February 2019

Not a cloud in the sky all day with winds gusting to 18 knots, it was a day for waterproof suntan lotion and skill. One Australian competitor described the winds as "Fresh to Frightening!". Perfect.

Two races with good wind, 52 starts on the first race and 50 on the second, this was competition at its best and the leader board is shaping up with the well-known Dart 18 Sailors leading the pack. Much to the astonishment of his fellow Royal Varuna Yacht Club members, Gareth Owen achieved a 1st and 2nd. Well done Hebe Hemming his crew who is definitely doing something right!

Dave and Louise Roberts, with a double first yesterday managed an eighth and fourth today which is sufficient to still place them in second place overall. Following up and rapidly improving with a 2nd and a 1st in today's racing were Daniel Norman and crew Alyesha Monkman. With a discard kicking in, the order board could change dramatically tomorrow.

Down the pack Damrongsak and crew Kitsada dropped to a still creditable 10th place. With lighter winds expected in the latter half of the week, we can expect to see them rise in the leader board.

With the support of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, special thanks to all the sponsors of what is turning out to be a near perfect sailing event: The Ministry of Tourism and Sport, Pattaya City Government Sports Authority of Thailand, Bangkok Hospital, France Catamaran, Big Chilli, Fiona and Larry, Ocean Marina, Pattaya Mail, Rooster and ThaiBev.
