St. Margaret's Bay, N.S., & Gimli, MB, to welcome 200 young sailors at 2022 Sail East and Sail West

Close to 200 sailors from Western Canada and the Atlantic will be in action this weekend, July 16 and 17, as they will take part in Sail Canada 2022 Sail East competition at St. Margaret Sailing Club in Glen Haven, Nova Scotia, or Sail Canada 2022 Sail West event at the Gimli Yacht Club in Manitoba.

At the St. Margaret Sailing Club, a total of 137 sailors from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince-Edward-Island and Newfoundland and Labrador, will compete at Sail Canada 2022 Sail East at Bay Wind Regatta in the 29er, 420, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and Opti classes

A total of 55 athletes from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, Yukon and Northwest Territories will take part in Sail Canada 2022 Sail West event in the 29er, 420, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7, Open Portsmouth Handicap and Opti classes. It will be the first edition of Sail West since the start of the Covid pandemic. Both competitions will be held in accordance with the public health and social measures that are in place.

The Sail East and Sail West events are part of a series of three Regional Championships that are overseen by Sail Canada, which also includes an event in Central Canada to be held July 23-24 at the Hudson Yacht Club, QC.

These three regional championships are attended by:

  • U15 sailors in the Optimist class;
  • U17 sailors in the Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420 and 29er classes;
  • Open class sailors in Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, 420, 29er and Optimist classes.

These competitions provide a chance for sailors to train and compete with high-level sailors in their region, in addition to serving as talent identification opportunities for regional and provincial sailing teams, as development and mentoring opportunities for coaches, as well as training and development opportunities for officials and volunteers.
