17-22 July 2022
The open Nationals have started on one of the hottest days ever recorded in the UK. 250 boats made their way past the bathers on Hayling Islands beaches to battle it out for the honour of becoming the 2022 National champion in their respective fleets.
Harken had started the week with a great welcome evening providing food and prizes. Although the morning dawned with light winds the fleets launched after a short delay.
Conditions - 6 to 9 knots with an increasing tide.
The ILCA 4 fleet was dominated by Freddie Sunderland, taking first in both races in the yellow fleet followed by Angus Beale. The red fleet was closer, with Noah Evans and Alex Cogen Sivarajan level on points closely followed by Daniel Kin Chung Chan and Tom Hakes.
The ILCA6 fleet, again split into two flights, was much tighter. The top 9 places all sharing the pain and the glory. Daisy Collingridge, Ben Elvin, Ian Gregory and Molly Sacker all scoring bullets and Matilda Nicholls level on points. Oliver Payne did well in such an expert fleet to get a 16th overall considering he is under 17.
In the ILCA 7 fleet Jake Farren - Price soared a 1st and 2nd to lead overnight but Finley Dickinson took the second race and, if he can get rid of his 6th when the discards come in, will be pushing Jake hard. Several younger sailors have moved into the 7's and George Colquitt did brilliantly with 4th over all.
Tonight it's prizes and the prize draw from Southeast Sailboats who are sponsoring the day and a Mexican themed evening food and entertainment.
All to play for...
