The entire SSL family is in mourning with the passing of Matteo Auguadro.

According to the Italian press, Matteo, along with four others, was climbing a mountain using crampons on Sunday 12th January when an avalanche broke away on the eastern ridge of Punta Valgrande, a 2,856-metre peak in the Lepontine Alps on the border between the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Switzerland, in the municipality of Trasquera. Three people including Matteo tragically lost their lives.

The Italian bowman was part of the silver medal winning team at the SSL Gold Cup Gran Canaria 2023 and recognised as one of the best sailors in the RC44 and TP52 classes, collecting numerous titles, as well as being part of the Damiani Italia Challenge America's Cup team in 2009.

All our thoughts are with his family and friends, and we send our deepest condolences, especially to Matteo's wife, SSL journalist Rachele Vitello, and their two daughters.

Rest in peace and sail on Matteo.
