After the huge success of last year's inaugural event, the FM Sailing Colander Cup is back for 2026 — proving once again that great sailing doesn't have to come with a big price tag.
Last May, the crew at FM Sailing teamed up with Northampton Sailing Club to prove that sailing doesn't have to be expensive or exclusive. The inaugural Colander Cup brought together 26 boats, each bought for under £300, and sailors ranging from national champions to newer racers looking to get involved. The result? A relaxed, good-natured regatta that reminded everyone what dinghy sailing is really about — fun, friendship, and a touch of healthy competition.
As the evenings draw in and club racing winds down, there's no need to drift away from the sport. Why not use the extra time to hunt for that hidden gem of a boat? Because come 9th May 2026, that bargain-bin beauty could win you £313.51 and a place in Colander Cup folklore.
The Rules (a.k.a. The Sensible Bit)
They're simple, mostly sensible, and full of character:
- Acquire a boat valued less than £313.51- Not only has the event grown, but to keep things fair your budget has increased to stay inline with inflation.
- Register your interest via FM Sailing's Colander Cup page
- Arrive at Northampton Sailing Club ready to race on Saturday, 9th May 2026
- Sort somewhere to stay (optional)— the event's now a full weekend (camping on-site is available)
- Bring your sense of humour and something vaguely watertight
Last year's fleet included boats salvaged from gardens, theatre props and forgotten club racks. Beauty was optional; buoyancy helped.
The Weekend
Saturday's format stays the same:
- Four sprint races in the morning
- A long-distance race with a Le Mans-style start in the afternoon
The evening brings food, laughter and prize-giving, with one lucky sailor walking away with a colander full of £313.51 cash.
In true Colander Cup spirit, last year's winners shared the love — donating half to the RNLI and half behind the bar for fellow competitors.
Sunday will see the addition of the Colander Cruise, a laid-back day of on-the-water games, mucking about and the chance to admire (or question) each other's boat-buying decisions.
No Boat? No Problem.
A few Northampton SC club boats will be available to charter on a first-come, first-served basis for those keen to join the fun without buying their own. Book early to avoid disappointment.
