This Father's Day, we're celebrating the dads who gave us a love of the water.
They taught us to tie a bowline before we could tie our shoes. They taught us to read a sky, respect a bar crossing, and never, ever question why the garage needed quite that much rope. They knew which bay would be sheltered when the forecast turned, and exactly how much gear was "required" for what was supposed to be a simple day out.
But somewhere along the way, those little lessons became something more.
They became part of how we experience New Zealand.
For many of us, Dad — or Grandad — was the person who first made us feel at home on the water. And that connection has a way of travelling through generations.
We all know one.
Boat Dad. Fishing Dad. Sailing Dad. Beach Dad. The Dad who has checked the marine forecast three times before breakfast. The Dad whose idea of relaxing is tinkering with something that appeared to be working perfectly well already.
Then there's Golf Dad. Travel Dad. And Grandad, who's accumulated enough stories to fill several long passages home.
Different dads. Different adventures.
But often the same connection to this place — the coast, the landscape and the unmistakable feeling of being out there in New Zealand.
