Audi Melges 20 US Nationals at Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco Day 2

by International Audi Melges 20 Class Association 7 Oct 2012 22:01 NZDT 5-7 October 2012

Fierce competition, Kiss in overall lead

The 2012 Audi Melges 20 U.S. National Championship, hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club boasted three more races under beautiful San Francisco Bay conditions on Saturday. This time though, the competition could not possibly have been more fierce and intense. Defending National Champion Michael Kiss on Bacio hit the race course with a serious plan of action that clearly worked, granting him the overall lead going into the final day. One slim point behind is fleet newcomer Richard Davies on Section 16 and in third, is Paul Reilly on Red Sky.

After a brief on land postponement, the fleet went racing shortly after twelve noon with an aggressive Kiss, Davies and Reilly mixing it up on the first beat. Reilly managed to pull to the forefront of the pack to secure the win, while Davies took second. Overnight leader John Kilroy Jr. on Samba Pa Ti took third.

The second and third races of the day (races five and six in a series of nine) went to Davies as his team of tactician Charlie McKee and crew Matt Pistay came on super strong. The second race of the day was anything but easy as he fought off a ferocious Kiss and Reilly, who continuously battled for the second place position. Davies went on to win, just ahead of Kiss securing second, Reilly settled for third.

Davies delivered yet again in the last race of the day as he slowly but surely took command of the fleet winning out over Kiss and Reilly. It was down to the wire as the two match raced to the finish line, finishing respectively in second and third.

Sunday marks the final day of competition. Two additional races are scheduled.
