Streaker Northern Championship at Beaver Sailing Club

by Doug Horner 15 May 2018 17:24 NZST

The first round of the roostersailing.com Streaker National Super Series was held at Beaver Sailing Club for the Northern Championship. A solid turnout of 25 boats complimented an already positive year for numbers on the Streaker circuit.

Race one was predominantly a battle for the lead between Ian Jones and Martin Penty, never more than a few metres from each other and constantly swapping the lead. Right on their transoms was Veronica Falat, watching for the slightest slip up to take the opportunity to jump into the lead herself. In the end Martin took the race win with Ian and Veronica rounding out the top 3. In 4th Phil Manning had remained consistent throughout the race, and in 5th Steve Blackburn had made an impressive recovery from what looked like an unfavourable start to his race.

In race two a small pack at the front made up of Alan Gillard, Veronica Falat, Ian Jones and Martin Penty took a lead over the following fleet. However, behind was Steve Blackburn on a mission to make it up to the lead 4 and push to the front. With no one able to open up a gap, Steve was able tack his way through the final beat to the line and take the race win. In 2nd was Martin Penty, and Alan, Veronica and Ian filling up the top 5 spots.

The last race of the day, Martin Penty had clearly grown tired of racing around with everyone else and so decided push ahead to an unassailable lead. Ian Jones was comfortably in 2nd with no real threat to his position but behind Steve Blackburn and Phil Manning were in a constant battle lap after lap. At the finish line it was Phil that took the 3rd place.

Overall with two race wins Martin became the Streaker Northern Champion.
