Whitsunday Sailing Club are hosting the 2019 AUS O'pen Skiff Championships at Airlie Beach, QLD. Racing got under way today in champagne sailing conditions with a steady 12 knots funneling through the hills onto the race area.
Three races were held today, Breanne Wadley from Tinaroo Sailing Club made her presence felt on day one as she dominated the days racing. The short sharp chop mixed with extremely shifty winds makes racing at Airlie Beach very tactical. The short courses also created tight fleet racing, lots of action at each mark and even a few penalties called by the on water judges.
The Silver and Gold fleet were equally as impressive as the Silvers completed all their racing in challenging conditions and still sailed in with smiles on their faces after a long day on the water. Green fleet set up their own mini course in more sheltered area, where they played a few games and kept the sailing fun.
The forecast doesn't lack any wind for the next few days, which is good news for some, and challenging for others. But all in all is lining up to be yet another fantastic Nationals!
