Euromarine Insurance Ramsgate Week 2019 - Day 3

by Piers Hodges 24 Jul 2019 18:35 NZST 21-26 July 2018

Euromarine Insurance Ramsgate Week 2019 Day 3 saw the second of the IRC and cruiser class regatta series race different courses in warm sunny conditions which started in a very light breezes, which eventually built to around six or seven knots.

The IRC boats were set a triangular course in the deeper waters in a challenging southerly running tide which proved a solid test of crews and tacticians alike.

In IRC1, Peter Jackson made a near perfect start on starboard tack against a port tack field and led the field away in the Pronavia 42 'Assassin' on the challenging beat to the first mark through the subtle wind holes, shifts and lifts. True to form, Richard Matthew's Ker 51 'Oyster XXII" worked their way through the field and went on to claim line honours by over 30 minutes, but it wasn't enough given their high rating, with the youngsters on 'Tontin Pups' following up their win on day one from local boat 'Stiletto' with Oystercatcher XXXIII in third.

IRC2 Niek Spiljard bought his HOD35 'Vanilla' home ahead of local boat 'Sandstorm' from Brita van Roussun's IRC2 class HOD35 'Zarafa'.

In IRC3, the Farr half tonner 'Swuzzlebubble' continued to impress with class line honours and a comfortable win on corrected time from local newcomer Gary Furneaux in his SJ35 'Magnum' from the Belgian half tonner 'Spip' owned by Martin Thibaut.

The cruiser classes stayed closer inshore initially before rounding some of the marks used in the IRC course with some finding the light winds and foul tide particularly challenging.

In Class 5 local boat 'Maverick' won from Nick Moutlon's 'Dabtoe' ahead of Danny Besse 'Mrs Jones' in third.

In Class 6, Jean Marc Devos made it three for three with a 1st place in 'Carpe Diem', followed by local boats 'Amelie' and 'Miss Amelia'.

In class 7 James Fisher bought home the ¾ tonner 'Borsalino' ahead of Bernard Sealy in 'Karibia Breezes' with Andy Renshaw's Impala 28 'Wild Rover' third on corrected time.
