The third Feva traveler series was hosted by Maraetai Sailing Club over the weekend.
Special thanks to their entire team who put on an excellent weekend and made everyone welcome, also to NZ Sailcraft for sponsoring the prizes.
Current RS Feva World champion Simon Cooke was on hand to help with tuning and tips throughout the weekend, which was greatly received by the sailors.
Saturday's racing produced four challenging races in five to eight knots of wind.
Race 1 was won by Simon and Ashton Cooke (father and son team) who managed the large right-hand shift on the first beat and left-hand shift on the second beat very well. Luka Ropers and Carter Robson kept things close to the first top mark rounding and held the fleet off to the finish with very challenging runs. Newcomer to the fleet Tom Rebbeck and current Open World Champion Oskar Masfen rounded close behind and learnt the hard lessons of angles downwind as they dropped back to 5th by the finish.
Kate Rasmussen and Madi Russell had an excellent race coming through to finish 3rd. Daniella Woolridge and Katie Mulcahy sailed well to come through to 4th.
Race 2 saw a new wind line come down the right and caught Luka and Carter off guard after having started well off the pin. Tom and Oskar tacked off right early and caught the fleet napping, creating a large lead which they held to the finish with improved downwind angles. Simon and Ashton caught back to second place followed by Daniella and Katie.
Race 3 and 4 were very similar with a slight centre-left bias. Luka and Carter sailed well to finish with two second place finishes behind Simon and Ashton. Tom and Oskar finished with a third and fourth, working slightly too far right on the beats hoping for a race two repeat. Jonathan Lowe and Ben McKeen finished with their best race in third to finish the day. Daniella and Katie had a steady fourth and sixth.
Day 2 didn’t eventuate due to lack of wind, leaving results for the series as below.
Open: Simon and Ashton
Youth: Tom and Oskar
Female: Daniella and Katie
Junior: Kate and Madi
