The Power of the Squad: Q&A Live Call with Olympic Medallist Aaron McIntosh

The Power of the Squad is undeniable, so why do so few sailors club together and work as a shared unit? The skill of the coach is sometimes to bring rivals together and have them working towards a shared goal.

Aaron McIntosh won a windsurfing bronze medal for New Zealand at the Sydney 2000 Games. Since then he has worked with Dorian van Rijsselberghe, coaching the Dutch windsurfer to back-to-back gold medals at London 2012 and Rio 2016. But van Rijsselberghe was pipped to Tokyo selection by his great friend and training partner, Kiran Badloe who will go to Tokyo as the favourite to win yet another windsurfing gold for the Netherlands.

Join Aaron for an in-depth Q&A this week with the Road To Gold team, Hamish Willcox and Andy Rice.

When?

The Q&A kicks off on Zoom at 8pm UK time/ 9pm Central European Time on Wednesday evening 16 June. That's 7am Thursday morning 17 June in Auckland, where Hamish is in the final weeks of training with Pete Burling & Blair Tuke on their 49er campaign for the Olympic Regatta next month in Tokyo.

What we'll be asking...

We'll be asking Aaron what makes his world-class athletes tick.

How is it they seem to be having more fun than anyone else in the boat park and then go out and dominate the race course?

And what convinced them to work together so closely when only one of the them goes to the Games?

Whether or not you're a windsurfer, the principles of world-class campaigning apply to all kinds of Olympic programs and the wider sailing world generally.

Whatever level you're currently at with your sailing, join Hamish and Andy for this 60-minute Q&A session to ask Aaron your specific questions. Here's how you get on the call:

  1. Make sure you're signed up to the Road To Gold Facebook Group to get the Zoom link to the call.

  2. Click on the Zoom link and register to join the call this Wednesday/Thursday (depending on where you are in the world!)
