The call had gone out to all the prospective 36R Vane skippers and
just a handful responded to be able to take part for the day. Eric and
John were able to sail, whereas Bob was awaiting hull repairs and Tony
had lost his 'B' rig jib, to the storm god jitters putting it through
the shredder.
The wind was up at a good average from a just off South direction,
enabling the practice of reach along the lake in both directions. Tony
would pole for John on the near bank and Bob was able to assist Eric
for his new boat outing.
Peter had already made out score cards and it was Eric's choice for
the first leg which counted as the running leg for the 2 points. John
had used his boat 'Taxatuan' before, so was now getting to memorise
and note his good settings.
The first leg went easy to John, but through out the day Eric was
slowly getting used to his boat 'Nere'nuf' and the margins were
getting much tighter. With only two boats, you only have to sail up
and down twice, thus giving each other choice on the start lines. The
four legs of the lake were completed fairly quickly for a relaxed
lunch with John only dropping 2 points.
Another after lunch round where Eric could catch up, but was only able
to grab another 2 points. The score sheet didn't give the racing
justice as some of the legs were very close. All had gained valuable
knowledge from the day as we are pretty new to vane sailing and with
no-one to truly lead us it was swim or sink.
The weather had been a bit drizzly all day so wasn't too kind to us,
although this left the whole lake free to just us four mad enough to
brave the elements. Next week on Saturday is another repeat for this
class and as always anyone is free to come along and to see what's
going on in the great world of Vane.
