ARC Portugal: History and prizes

by World Cruising Club 22 Jun 2022 20:53 NZST

Saturday was an early day for the fleet as they jumped on the bus on their way to visit the famous pilgrimage town in the north west of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela.

Our tour to the old town was led by our guides, who took us through the narrow streets and squares, giving in depth background information of the history of St. James and the city where he was buried.

It is calculated that over 200,000 pilgrims travel to the city each year. ARC Portugal crews were very surprised to see the amount of people that kept arriving to Praza Do Obradoiro whilst on the tour.

They then had some free time to discover the great Galician gastronomy. An entire street full of restaurants and tapas bars, definitely a must when in Santiago de Compostela.

It was a rainy morning in Baiona but that didn't stop people from going out and into the town. Sunday is usually a busy day for restaurants in the area here in Baiona. However, participants had their agenda booked for the night as they gathered all together in the evening to find out who had one a prize on the first leg of the Portuguese rally, ARC Portugal 2022, at the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona restaurant.

In first place, under corrected time, in Class A, managing to win the first leg crossing the Bay of Biscay was Bolero followed by Blue Pearl and Blonde Moment.

In Class B the vessel Kite Runner came in first under corrected time followed by the double-handed crew in Via Mioand in third place Arkyla.

In the Multihull division La Vie en Roses managed to arrive first. Having said that, being the only catamaran in the event, they will only win the prize for the first leg.
