Sanlorenzo unveils SX120 - its largest-ever crossover yacht

by Sanlorenzo 11 Jul 23:28 NZST

Sanlorenzo presents SX120, the largest-ever yacht in the Italian maison's crossover range, heralding a pioneering new product concept breaking the mould of traditional yachting and reinforcing Sanlorenzo's position as an industry leader.

SX120 represents Sanlorenzo's commitment to both product evolution and innovation, as the first composite yacht to feature the pioneering new IPS (Inboard Performance System) Professional Platform, developed by Volvo Penta, a project first presented in Düsseldorf in 2024. The innovative system IPS Professional Platform uses twin 1,000 HP engines per pod, delivering the performance of larger engines with a smaller footprint, reduced fuel consumption, and lower emissions. Its introduction is fully aligned with Sanlorenzo's pathway to reducing environmental impact, commitment and promotion of sustainability in the nautical sector.

SX120 fuses pioneering technology with cutting-edge nautical design, headlined by an inspiring 70 sqm beach area featuring opening side decks, a 360 degrees panoramic view from the Upper Deck, a Sun Deck with configurable Smart Island. The beach area, moreover, offers her owners the flexibility of a retractable swimming pool, which can be covered or uncovered through a lift and slide mechanism of the sundeck to ensure aesthetic usability, privacy, and safety in navigation.

Fusing flying bridge and explorer

A synthesis between the classic motoryacht with flying bridge and the explorer range, the SX line is designed to efficiently and harmoniously integrate style, adaptability and functionality, transforming sailing and life on board into a new and engaging experience. Consistent with the stylistic features of the range, the SX120 is distinguished by its sleek, sporty lines and its wide on-board spaces, in constant dialogue with the external environment. With its 270 GT tonnage and 37 meters in length, SX120 is the largest vessel built according to the brand revolutionary SX concept.

"SX120 represents the natural evolution of a range that has changed the way yachting is conceived and redefined the experience of living on board, introducing a new idea of space, livability and connection with the sea." - said Tommaso Vincenzi, CEO Sanlorenzo.

"The new flagship of the SX line combines functionality and aesthetics, simplicity and elegance, performance and sustainability in a single product. In addition, the SX120 is the first yacht of a big size to integrate Volvo Penta's new IPS Professional Platform, a compact and efficient system prepared for the use of hybrid energy sources, and designed to improve performance, autonomy and comfort while sailing. This innovative propulsion platform allows for the achievement of certainly unique design solutions related to the use of efficient PODs drive even on large yachts"

Once again, the perfect conceptual and formal balance between the boat's exteriors and interiors stems from the collaboration with Zuccon International Project and Piero Lissoni, who enhance with their usual elegance and mastery all the potential of this yacht with its essential and sophisticated design.

Innovation and comfort: unprecedented spaces for an extendable beach area

"The Sanlorenzo SX120 is a project that is a manifesto of the evolutionary path that the SX range has taken in recent years. A journey that - with SX88, SX76, SX112 and then SX100 - has unequivocally demonstrated the concept's ability to decline in different dimensions. An evolution that has not limited itself to recalibrating the proportions of a basic design, but has led to the creation of boats with their own identities, equipped with features and design solutions that justify the positioning of each model within the range." - Bernardo Zuccon, Zuccon International Project.

Articulated on four decks, the SX120 is characterized by a total rethinking of space, characterized by the displacement of volumes to the bow and an impressive aft cockpit, completely dedicated to bathing activities. Stepping aboard, one encounters one of the boat's distinctive elements: the 40sqm beach area that, thanks to opening side terraces, can extend up to 70sqm. The entire platform allows maximum connection with the marine environment through convenient water access on three sides. The same beach area also houses a pop-up pool, which can be covered or uncovered through a lift and slide sundeck mechanism to ensure optimal sailing conditions. A unique solution on the market, a symbol of Sanlorenzo's research and attention to detail.

A few steps connect the beach area with a large, cozy and bright lounge, an ideal continuation of the outdoor space. The Lower Deck also houses four guest cabins, one of which can be kept open as a lounge or closed to convert it into a cabin, a small hammam and the crew area.

The generous aft spaces aboard the SX120 represent the tangible result of a technological evolution that aims to redesign the standards of contemporary yachting. In fact, for the first time ever, this unit will be equipped with Volvo Penta's IPS Professional Platform, unveiled at the 2024 Düsseldorf boat show. This platform, designed for the modular integration of both traditional and alternative energy sources, stands out by its extreme compactness and optimized propulsion architecture. These features enable a significant reduction in the engine room space, freeing up valuable volumes that, in the design phase, can be repurposed during the design phase for the owners, guests and crew.

"From the propulsion point of view," says Nicola Pomi, VP Marine Sales Yacht and Superyacht Division, "Volvo Penta's IPS Professional platform represents a technological evolution geared toward efficiency. The system makes use of steerable units and hydrodynamically optimized counter-rotating propellers, which allow a significant reduction in energy losses and a marked improvement in maneuverability, especially at low speeds."

A distinctive feature of the platform is the Eco Mode function, which is a new smart feature that automatically adjusts engine power based on real-time demand to optimize fuel consumption, reduce emissions and mechanical wear. The platform will consider optimal fuel consumption and engine run-time hours to engage the engine with the least hours for a given scenario. This will improve efficiency, and extend service/maintenance intervals.

The propulsion is equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust gas treatment service.

The benefits are clear: lower specific fuel consumption, reduced harmful emissions and decreased noise levels - all contributing positively to both the marine environment and onboard comfort. Aligned with Sanlorenzo and Volvo's vision for more sustainable yachting, Eco Mode and the SCR represent a concrete solution balancing performance and environmental responsibility.

The introduction of this technology represents not just engineering progress, but also a new paradigm in the integrated design between naval architecture, functional layout and propulsion systems, opening a new phase in the layout and construction of future-oriented yachts.

Brightness, flexibility and open views of the sea: the elegance of the essential

"The SX120 is the latest addition to the SX family, which I think is the most creative range in living memory in yachting in the last 30 years. The SX120 is a spectacular floating architecture. We took all the things the other SXs taught us and put them here. It has beaches, floors that interconnect, big openings...a real floating villa in the body of an absolutely extraordinary project that the SX is." - Piero Lissoni, Lissoni & Partners.

Moving up to the Main Deck, guests' attention is drawn to a vast saloon, enveloped in natural light thanks to the large windows, where a magnificent sculptural wooden staircase, clad externally in steel, bears the unmistakable signature of Piero Lissoni. Inserted in the center of the boat, it is an element that adds value to the environment, and at the same time a functional solution that allows a fluid connection between the decks.

The Main Deck also houses, aft, a dining area open on three sides, which can accommodate up to 14 guests and from which the salon is accessed through the transparencies of a large window. The positioning of the guest cabins in the Lower Deck made it possible to devote the forward part of this deck completely to the bright master bedroom with a sea view, which enjoys direct access to a space in the bow, an area that can be equipped as a sundeck or a patio, with a coffee table and an outdoor lounge. This layout, typical of large yachts, is made possible here by the redistribution of space.

Climbing the elegant staircase leads to the Upper Deck, which immediately surprises the guest with an amazing 360-degree view open to the horizon. The spacious interior is designed with great flexibility to become a dining area, media room or play room at the owner's request. The Upper Deck then opens onto a cozy lounge overlooking the sea, connected via an external staircase to one of SX120's most original innovations: the Flybridge, which, for the first time on this type of yacht, is transformed into an elegant Sun Deck. A new concept was introduced here, the Smart Island, a modular seating system that can be freely configured and equipped with additional features. A reserved, almost hidden space, a locus amoenus in which to enjoy maximum privacy.

In its interior design, SX120 reflects sophisticated material research and special attention to detail, a distinctive stylistic feature of the work of Piero Lissoni, who designed the interiors of the first unit. Throughout the vessel, the ceilings are punctuated by refined wooden quills, a series of dense cusps that continue vertically along the walls, creating an architectural effect of continuity and depth. Some vertical inserts, on the other hand, have been treated with a steel-effect film, giving the rooms a contemporary feel. The floors elegantly alternate between parquet and carpet, while in the bathrooms a marble-effect ceramic material was chosen, combining aesthetics and functionality. In the master stateroom, characterized by more intense tones and a slightly higher ceiling, there is a distinctive element of great impact: the backlit headboard, designed as a decorative screen, which discreetly separates the bed area from the closet area, ensuring comfort and intimacy in a refined design environment.
