Industry support for Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race start is the premier aquatic event in Australia with its mix of venue, competition, technology, spectators, media and economic boost, according to the Boating Industry Association.

BIA President Darren Vaux said the 75th running of the race is shaping to be a spectacular event.

"There will be 157 yachts lining up to race, supported by the traditional spectator fleet that can measure into the thousands and of course the hundreds of thousands of people who take up positions around the harbour foreshores, and the millions more who tune into the action on tv and online.

"On behalf of the boating industry, I would like to wish all the sailors a safe and fast event.

"It will be a busy time on the harbour and it is important skippers in the spectator fleet understand their capabilities and those of their craft. Boating Safety Officers and Water Police will be out assisting the public and we ask the boating public to observe exclusion zones and follow directions from authorities.

"The industry has a deep involvement in such events through the members who are sailing, to the boat builders, shipwrights, mechanics, electricians, trimmers and sailmakers that help to get the boats on the line."

The breadth of vessels range from historic timber classics through to the latest technology-inspired maxi yachts, and this requires a wide range of skills from the boating industry.

Boating is a way of life for many families in Australia, an island continent with 35 821km of coastline. It is estimated that 5 million people participate in some form of boating each year.

"Whilst there will be plenty of action on and around our waterways this summer, I would also like to acknowledge those who are been impacted by the drought and bush fires, and wish all a safe holiday season," concluded Vaux.
