20th Palermo-Montecarlo Regatta - Day 5

by Palermo-Montecarlo 24 Aug 06:42 NZST 19-24 August 2025

The 20th anniversary of the Palermo-Montecarlo is preparing for its grand finale: after Friday's record number of finishes, this Saturday, August 23rd, saw only four boats finish the race.

At 1:30 AM, Notte di Stelle, Alberto Chiappino's Italia Yachts 12.98 from the Italian Naval League of Turin, arrived, a few minutes later - at 1:44 AM - it was the turn of the Polish Corel 45 Sailing Factory 2, a Farr design, skippered by Jacek Chabowsky.

This morning, at 9:51 AM, Lady Jane X Rated, a 2005 X46 owned by German Anders Kahler, crossed the finish line. At 2:48 PM, it was the turn of Angelica II, Antonio Centrone's spectacular all-wood 1985 Sciarrelli, which, with a family crew, managed to complete the race.

This brings the total number of boats to have duly completed the race. Only two remain under way and racing: Aldebaran, a Bavaria CR55 skippered by Roland Szabo, expected around midnight, and the last, I am Bad, a Bad 37 owned by the Speciale-Bileddo team, skippered by Velaclub Palermo. Both of these boats suffered damage, stopped in Olbia for repairs, and, in accordance with the race rules, requested and were granted permission to restart and complete the course with appropriate declarations of compliance. The weather conditions have now changed after days of strong winds, with a slight remnant of westerly wind, especially off Monte Carlo, making it difficult for I Am Bad to reach the finish line before the deadline: 12:00 on Sunday, August 24th.

Road to the prize-giving ceremony, rankings defined: prizes and trophies

The rankings are now final and will be announced on Sunday at the prize-giving ceremony after the 12:00 time limit. The following prizes will be awarded: the Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita Trophy to the first yacht in corrected time, the maxi Black Jack 100, owner Remon Vos, skipper Tristan Lebrun; the Angelo Randazzo Trophy to the first yacht in corrected time in the overall ORC fleet (the largest in this edition), No Regret, an ICE 52 of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, skipper Edoardo Bonanno; The Emanuele Bruno Trophy will be awarded to the first Sicilian sailing club boat to cross the finish line in Monte Carlo: Manticore, Franz Baruffaldi Preis' Mylius 60, Circolo Velico Sferracavallo, which also won the Maxi fleet in corrected time.

There will also be awards for the top three places in the ORC and IRC categories in corrected time, both at the Porto Cervo gate and at the finish line, the top three in the ORC Group 1 and Group 2 standings (divided by length), and the first in the Double Handed standings (two-person crew): Tengher, Andrea Magnani's Swan 42, Yacht Club Italiano. The awards ceremony will take place at 7:00 PM at the Yacht Club de Monaco.
