The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was launched in 1980 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), and welcomed Rolex as a Title Sponsor five years later. In 2025 the prestigious club will pay tribute to its founder, His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, who passed away in February, but whose forward-looking vision led to the creation of an institution that has become an international benchmark in yachting.

This is provided by the YCCS in conjunction with the International Maxi Association (IMA), whose critical work is also supported by the Swiss watchmaker. Rolex Testimonee Paul Cayard, the renowned United States yachtsman, took part in the regatta's first edition and admires how its stature has grown and strengthened:

My earliest memories stem from the first-ever event partnered by Rolex, 40 years ago in 1985. As the relationship with the YCCS deepened, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup quickly became a massively important event and was significant in the development of my own career. It was where I built many of the skills and tools of my profession."
