Globe40 2025 update - fast gallop towards the Canaries, German team in the lead

by Sirius Events 17 Sep 07:41 NZST 16 September 2025

After this superb start from Cadiz on Sunday, the Class40s of the 2nd edition of the GLOBE40 didn't wait long to demonstrate their full potential and their desire to compete. Late Tuesday, the first boats reached the Canary Islands after having already covered nearly 700 miles.

After starting the race in light winds on Sunday and overnight from Sunday to Monday, the teams hit the famous trade winds, which allowed them to shift up a gear on downwind conditions; The routing took them towards the island of Madeira before turning south during the night for the first group. Tuesday was nothing more than a long glide towards the Canary Islands, approaching 20 knots, the first test of their strategies since the course was open, with no mandatory marks to pass.

In this game, it was the young Germans of NEXT GENERATION BOATING AROUND THE WORLD who confirmed their abilities observed during the prologue; at an average speed of 12.20 knots since the start of the first leg and with a lead of around ten miles over CREDIT MUTUEL, they approached the Canary Islands passage in the lead; a very strategic passage since they apparently chose to pass between the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, while CREDIT MUTUEL seems to have chosen to pass east of Gran Canaria. Race results in a few hours... And BELGIUM OCEAN RACING isn't far behind, in third place and less than 2 miles behind the runner-up. These three are not about to give up, and the story is only just beginning.

Among the sharp competitors, the race is no less exciting to follow. BARCO BRASIL and FREE DOM are engaged in fierce competition, with the brasilian currently in favor. WILSON AROUND THE WORLD and JANGADA RACING are also in duel mode. WHISKEY JACK is currently a little behind and searching for speed, but we can trust Mélodie Schaffer's experience and determination on the long legs to actively get back into the game.

Note that the 24-hour distance record on the GLOBE40, held by the Canadian skipper since 2023 at 350 miles, was broken by Lennart Burke and Melvin during the day by 370 miles. While we wait to break other records...
